A dedicated coral room with a real protocol

Have you ever brought home a beautiful frag, only to watch it fade away a week later?

Buying corals & reef livestock for your home or office aquarium should be exciting, not stressful. We designed the coral room at Gulf Coast Aquatics to completely eliminate that guesswork for you. This separate space at the back of the store features its own dedicated lighting, flow, and parameter control.

Our team organizes frag racks by category to make browsing simple. Soft corals sit on the left, LPS in the middle, and SPS line the back wall. Every label shows the basics, like name, lighting need, flow need, and difficulty level.

We run every single coral that arrives through a strict intake process:

  • Visual Inspection: Spotting larger hitchhikers before they enter the system.
  • Chemical Dip: Treatment in CoralRx or Bayer eliminates hidden threats.
  • Quarantine: We require a dedicated observation period before any release to the sales floor.

CoralRx works incredibly well against common US pests like Montipora-eating nudibranchs, stripping them off in just 5 to 7 minutes. A detailed tracking system logs which frags came from which shipment. Our experts pull stock and investigate the source immediately if issues pop up after release.

The result is that what you see on the racks has completely cleared the intake process. We still recommend doing a second dip at home as cheap insurance.

What we stock

The coral room rotates weekly to keep the selection fresh. We stock a huge variety of specific morphs that fit both home and office tanks. Typical categories include:

  • Soft corals: Zoanthids and palys come in every color imaginable. Popular morphs like Utter Chaos zoas offer incredible vibrancy. Mushrooms (rhodactis, ricordea, discosoma) and leathers (toadstool, finger, devil’s hand) are always in stock. Green star polyps, xenia, kenya tree, and anthelia round out the section. This category provides the best starting point for new reefers.
  • LPS: Hammers, torches, and frogspawn are huge favorites right now. The highly sought-after Holy Grail Torch coral is a massive hit in 2026 for its neon yellow tentacles and blue tips. Candy canes (Caulastrea), acans, scolymia, blastomussa, micromussa, and favia or favites are also available. These corals are forgiving once your water parameters remain stable.
  • SPS: Montipora (cap, digi, plating), birdsnest, and acropora dominate this wall. We bring in named pieces whenever they become available from aquaculture facilities. Pocillopora and stylophora are usually on hand. These require highly stable tanks, so bring your water test results before purchasing.

Pricing and special orders

Most frags sit in the $20 to $150 range depending on size, rarity, and grow-out time. A basic Biota Red Montipora Cap runs about $25. We price named acros, premium zoa morphs, and large colonies much higher. High-end cultured LPS options, like a Rainbow Wall Hammer, can reach $125 or more. Our team lists pricing clearly per frag directly on the racks. Multi-frag deals and full reef builds are quoted on request.

Coral CategoryExample SpeciesAverage 2026 Price Range
Basic SPSBiota Red Montipora Cap$25 - $40
Premium SoftiesUtter Chaos Zoanthids$40 - $60
High-End LPSRainbow Wall Hammer$125 - $250+
Named SPSORA Carl Acropora$90 - $150+

Special orders are completely routine around here. We work with several major US coral wholesalers and aquaculture leaders like ORA and Biota. Chasing specific colonies and named frags happens weekly for our clients. Some rare pieces take 1 to 3 weeks to arrive. We will quote the timeline upfront and only charge once the coral is in your hands. Ensuring you are totally happy with the look is the top priority.

Lighting, flow and parameter advice

Most coral failures happen because of a lighting mismatch, parameter swings, or flow problems. Bad coral is rarely the actual issue. We sit down and talk about your specific setup before you buy anything. Getting these three elements right makes all the difference.

The Big Three Requirements

  • Lighting: Hitting the PAR target range for your category is crucial. We find that popular fixtures like the EcoTech Marine Radion Gen 6 XR15 usually need to run at specific intensities to hit 80 to 150 PAR for LPS corals. Fixture options, height above the water, and ramp times are all discussed in detail.
  • Flow: Random flow prevents waste buildup better than laminar flow. Evaluating dead spots, powerhead placement, and total water volume determines how much movement your specific coral needs.
  • Parameters: Target calcium at 420 to 450 ppm, alkalinity at 8 to 10 dKH, and magnesium at 1300 to 1400 ppm. Keeping phosphate strictly between 0.03 and 0.10, and nitrate from 1 to 10, prevents massive algae blooms.

Bring a water sample with you. Our staff tests your water completely free of charge to ensure everything is stable.

FAQ

Corals & Reef Livestock: common questions

Do you dip every coral?

Yes. Every coral runs through a dip on intake — CoralRx or Bayer depending on the coral and the suspected pest — and is then held for observation before it reaches the sales floor. We still recommend a home dip on top of that, especially for SPS and acros where pests can hide in the skeleton.

Can I bring a water sample before buying corals?

Please do. Free in-store testing covers salinity, calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, phosphate and nitrate for saltwater. We'll match coral choices to what your tank can actually support — bringing home a beautiful SPS for a tank with swinging alkalinity is a costly mistake we'd rather help you avoid.

What lighting do you recommend?

Depends on the tank and the corals. AI Hydra, Kessil A-series and Current USA Orbit are all solid options at different budgets. We're happy to talk PAR ranges and placement — bring tank dimensions and we'll size it.

Do you do special orders for specific frags?

Yes — most weekly orders from major coral wholesalers allow us to chase specific colonies and named frags. Some take 1-3 weeks; we'll quote the timeline up front and only charge once the piece is in your hands.
