Walk-in

Mon-Sat 10-6, Sun 12-5

Have you ever stared at a beautifully clear, vibrant aquarium full of freshwater fish and wondered if you could recreate that magic in your own space?

We hear that exact thought from local homeowners and business managers every day. A thriving aquatic display brings so much peace to a busy room.

Our professional service team is going to walk you through the exact steps we use to set up the perfect community tank. Grab a cup of coffee, and let’s go through it together!

## Freshwater done properly

The freshwater section runs the front half of the store, featuring planted community tanks, dedicated betta cubes, cichlid displays, and distinct areas for goldfish and plecos.

Our stocking rotates weekly, meaning the colorful wall you saw last week probably looks a little different today.

Every single fish on that wall has passed through a strict intake process before you ever see it. We hold them for observation, provide treatment if needed, and only release them to the floor once they are eating, breathing normally, and showing zero signs of illness.

Veterinary pathology data from the ESVP-ECVP-ESTP Congress shows that common aquatic parasites can cause mortality rates up to 100 percent without proper intervention. Our quarantine protocol prevents these disasters from ever reaching your home or office.

A typical intake process goes through three main steps:

- We conduct daily visual observations of every single tank.
- Targeted medications are applied the moment an issue appears.
- Our staff verifies complete health before any floor release.

Freshwater quarantine timelines are generally shorter than saltwater because the parasite landscape differs. We simply refuse to put a fish on the wall if it is not healthy enough for a personal tank.

## What we stock

The freshwater section holds everything a community keeper needs to build a stunning display. We stock a huge variety of species perfect for both quiet living rooms and busy commercial spaces.

A quick look at our typical inventory includes:

- **Community tropicals:** We carry neon, ember, cardinal, rummynose, and serpae tetras. Harlequin, chili, and lambchop rasboras share the space with corydoras, danios, and active livebearers.
- **Cichlids:** Our African Mbuna and Peacocks live alongside dwarf cichlids like apistogrammas, German Blue Rams, Bolivian Rams, and kribensis. You can check out our

- **Bettas:** We always have male veil-tails, halfmoons, plakats, and the occasional koi or galaxy available. Anyone buying these beauties gets a proper tank-size talk, and you can learn more by reading about

    .
- **Plecos:** Our team loves bristlenose, rubberlip, and hillstream loaches. Pet stores often sell common plecos at two inches, but US aquarium experts at Aquarium Source warn that they quickly grow to a massive 15 to 24 inches and require at least 120 gallons of water.
- **Goldfish:** We keep fancy goldfish and seasonal common varieties for ponds in a completely separate area. Customers need to remember that goldfish require different temperatures and produce a much heavier bioload than tropical community fish.
- **Shrimp, snails, and oddballs:** Our stock includes cherry shrimp, amano shrimp, nerite snails, mystery snails, and kuhli loaches to clean your tank.

## Honest compatibility advice

Most freshwater tank failures have one predictable root cause. We consistently see issues stemming from a stocking plan that simply did not work.

The tank might be overstocked, the tankmates could be incompatible, or the nitrogen cycle was not completely finished. Our team tries to head those problems off directly in the store.

Veterinary experts at PetMD note that “new tank syndrome” is actually the most common cause of death for fish in new aquariums across the US. We know from aquarium industry data that most slow tank failures are tied to insufficient filter capacity.

To prevent these issues, a staff member will always ask a few key questions before you buy:

- We always ask about your exact tank size.
- A staff member will need to know what current livestock you have.
- Our team will verify your exact filter capacity.
- The hardness of your local tap water is also a critical detail.

We will tell you directly if your plan will not work, and then we will suggest a beautiful alternative that will.

## Free water testing on every visit

Sarasota tap water is generally usable for freshwater tropicals as long as you use a high-quality dechlorinator. We highly recommend testing your source water because the Florida Department of Health notes that our groundwater comes from natural aquifers, making it noticeably hard.

The specific levels of pH, GH, and KH vary drastically by neighborhood and time of year. Our testing service helps you track how your parameters naturally drift as a tank matures.

The diagnostic panel checks for the following parameters:

- **Ammonia:** We require this to always read 0 in a cycled tank, as the Merck Veterinary Manual states that even 0.05 mg/L can cause permanent tissue damage to fish.
- **Nitrite:** This highly toxic compound must also read exactly 0.
- **Nitrate:** Our team recommends keeping this level under 40 ppm for most standard community tanks.
- **pH:** The ideal target depends entirely on what specific species you are keeping.
- **GH and KH:** We test these hardness markers because they matter immensely for cichlids, sensitive shrimp, and live plants.

The full testing panel takes only about 10 minutes to complete.

We offer this service completely free of charge, with absolutely no purchase required.

What customers say

## Freshwater reviews from Sarasota hobbyists

> "Finally a fish store where the staff knows what they're talking about. Marcus talked me out of buying fish that would've died in my tank. That's integrity."

> "My kids' first aquarium has been running 2 years now thanks to the setup advice here. No losses!"

FAQ

## Freshwater Fish: common questions

Do you quarantine freshwater fish too?

Yes — every freshwater fish is held and observed before sale, with shorter active treatment than saltwater but the same observation discipline. We pull anything showing ich, fin rot or fungal issues and treat or return it before it reaches the floor.

What's a good first fish for a 20-gallon tank?

Once cycled, a small school of 6-8 small tetras or rasboras plus a small group of corydoras is plenty. Bring tank dimensions and we'll put together a full stocking plan in store — free, no purchase needed.

Do you stock live plants?

We carry easy starter plants (java fern, anubias, java moss, amazon swords) and rotate in others depending on availability. We don't run a full planted-tank program, but we'll point you at what works in Sarasota tap water.

Can I bring water from my tank for testing?

Yes. One cup is plenty. We run ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, GH and KH on freshwater samples. No purchase needed and no appointment required — walk in during store hours.
